Research Highlights

Doctoral Research - Energy Efficient Sustainable Development

The doctoral research focused on evolving a set of plausible policy planning guidelines for energy efficient sustainable development using System Dynamics Theory and Models. The study, conducted on Chennai Metropolitan City, employed STELLA software 9.1.4 to develop an Integrated Model for Energy Efficient Sustainable Development.

Many scholars have explored various techniques and methods of analysis for evolving development plans and observed that application of System Dynamics Theory and Models are one of the most suitable techniques available for understanding the functions of the system, which is essential for the dynamic planning process. System Dynamic models for various subsystems were developed by employing STELLA software, to recognize the functions of various sub-systems of the system by considering most important control parameters, which influence the functions of the system.

An Integrated Model for Energy Efficient Sustainable Development of Metropolitan Region was developed to examine the system closely and its dynamic functions under different alternative conditions. The Validated System Dynamics model was employed to project control parameters for the year 2041 A.D. Various socio-economic, infrastructural, and environmental indicators were measured, and different scenarios under various alternative conditions were generated based on historical behavior, survey results of expert opinions, and trend analysis.

Future Research Directions

Building on the doctoral research, the following areas are being pursued:

  • ▸ Development plans based on present investigation outputs using Statistical Techniques, Operations Research, Artificial Neural Networks, Decision Support Systems, and Analytical Hierarchy Procedure
  • ▸ Annual plans for achieving development plan objectives
  • ▸ Program evolution based on development and annual plans
  • ▸ Project and scheme development with location analysis and DCF techniques
  • ▸ Modeling urban physics and environmental assessment
  • ▸ Urban infrastructural planning and redevelopment of slums
  • ▸ Urban economic development and urban system planning
